GUWAHATI: The locals of Chandrapur staged a Satyagraha on Saturday to protest against the move of the GMC (Gauhati Municipal Corporation) to shift the dumping ground from Boragaon to Chandrapur.

Former MP and Congress leader Manjit Mahanta and AASU (All Assam Students' Union) general secretary Sankar Jyoti Baruah were also present in the protest.

"The protest undertaken by the people of Chandrapur has great significance. The AASU has extended its full support to the protest. Chandrapur has all the qualities to become a tourist spot. I urge the State government to take initiatives to revive the closed industries of the area," said Baruah. He alleged that the district administration and the government are trying to suppress the people of Chandrapur and the AASU will not support the move.

"The people should become a victim of the divisive policies of the government. The democratic movement should be continued till the government is forced to withdraw its decision," said Baruah.

The protestors presented saplings to the officials of the Soil Conversation Department at Pragjyotishpur. The protestors stressed that the environment will be affected if the dumping ground is shifted permanently. They urged the Soil Conversation Department to submit a report to the Assam Government about the effects of the dumping ground on the environment.
