Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act losing popularity

GUWAHATI: The number of families getting 100 days employment under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA) is fast declining in Assam.

According to information provided in the Assam Assembly by the Panchayat & Rural Development Minister Naba Kumar Doley on Thursday, the MGNREGA provided 100 days employment to 1,85,160 families in 2006-07 when the scheme was launched in six district.

The number of such families has come down to 7440 in 2018-19 in 32 districts where the MGNREGA is in force. The number of families getting jobs under MGNREGA has started declining drastically from 2016-17 with only 11,411 followed by 10,935 in 2017-18 and 7440 in the current fiscal year (2018-19).
