GUWAHATI: Amir Ali, who police suspect is the mastermind behind the broad daylight murder of Purabi Dairy distributor Ranjit Bora in the Panjabari area of the city last month, was arrested on Monday.

Ali was arrested from his in-laws' house in Morigaon. He had reportedly gone there on December 3. He was brought to Guwahati and kept at Basistha Police Station on Monday night and today he was produced before the court.

According to police sources, Ali, a resident of Panjabari, was a police informer. There are also many cases registered against him. He is allegedly a drug addict. Sources added that Ali owns a Glamour bike which is similar to the bike that was used by the youths who had fired upon Bora.

On the other hand, police have arrested another person in connection to the murder – Chintu Medhi alias Kishore, who is also a resident of Panjabari. Both Ali and Medhi have been remanded to five days police custody. Another person allegedly involved in the murder, named Nazmul, is absconding.

Bora was shot at by two motorcycle-borne miscreants while he was going to deposit money in the ICICI Bank, Panjabari branch last month. He was about to alight from his car (Wagon R with registration number AS01BH5022) when the two miscreants came and tried to snatch his money bag. A struggle ensued and suddenly, one of the youths fired at Bora. A bullet pierced his neck and he collapsed on the car seat. He was taken to Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) but he was declared brought dead by doctors.

Bora's brother lodged an FIR at Dispur Police Station and the police registered a case 2479/22 u/s 392/302/32 R/W 25 (1) (A)/27 of the Arms Act.
