Ministry of Home Affairs orders all States and UTs to release some categories of convicts

GUWAHATI: The Union Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has asked all States and Union Territories (UTs) of the country to release some categories of convicts - on August 15, 2022, January 26, 2023, and August 15, 2023 - under the special remission.

According to sources, the MHA grants special remission to some categories of convicts whose crimes are non-heinous and the term of conviction is up to ten years or less.

Convicts sentenced for heinous crimes and those serving life imprisonment do not get any special remission.
