GUWAHATI: Chairman of the KVIC (Khadi and Village Industries Commission) Vinay Kumar Saxena has got into a huddle with all the KVIC chairmen of the northeastern States to find out ways and means to boost Khadi output in the region. The KVIC is a commission under the Ministry of MSME (Micro Small and Medium Enterprise), Government of India.

Talking to newsmen after the meeting here on Thursday, Saxena said that the zonal meet intends to focus on how khadi and village industries activities in the Northeast can be implemented in a more benefiting manner. “It’s a unique opportunity for the KVIC fraternity to come together, share, respond, cooperate and build up a new approach in achieving the mandate and playing a great role about inclusive sustainable rural development in the north-eastern region. About 80 per cent of its people are living in rural areas, so khadi and village industries have special relevance. In the spirit of KVI utilizing the locally available raw materials and local manpower on the rural areas make a match case for the north-eastern region.”

Saxena further said, “The honey mission is going on very well in the region. We’re going to hold a few northeast-specific exhibitions where the people of the region can showcase their own products. A separate online portal for Northeast products will also be a reality.”

He said a committee has been formed at the meeting comprising the chairmen and the CEOs (chief executive officers) of all the KVICs of the region. “Our aim is to reopen the closed khadi outlets and stalls in the region. We’re also reviewing the closed khadi institutions to reopen them. Our awareness camps keep making people aware of job opportunities in khadi and village industries. In the past four years we’ve given job opportunities to 21.68 lakh people all over India,” he said, and added, “Profit and loss is not our target. Our target is giving job avenues to people.”
