GUWAHATI: The GMC (Guwahati Municipal Corporation) announced that from Friday the price of mutton will be Rs 650 per kg against Rs 700 per kg now.

The Greater Guwahati Qureshi Meat Shoppers' Association held a meeting in this regard this morning and took the decision to slash the price of mutton to Rs 650 per kg. The Association later informed the GMC of its decision on slashing the price of mutton.

There had been differences of opinion between the GMC and the Association over the price of mutton. At the meeting between the two parties on May 27, the issue of mutton price could not be settled. However, it was decided that the Assam Livestock & Poultry Corporation's (ALPCO) slaughter house would charge Rs 60 per slaughtering. However, if over 1,000 goats are supplied for slaughtering the charge of slaughtering per goat would be Rs 50. If a mutton seller goes to the slaughter house without any goat and buys mutton for sale from the slaughter he would have to buy mutton at the rate of Rs 620 per kg. The ALPCO fixed a rate of Rs 650 per kg for consumers on April 16 during the lockdown. The Association, however, kept on selling mutton at Rs 700 per kg. The steep rise in mutton price also led to unpleasant situations between consumers and meat sellers in Guwahati.

At long last, the meat sellers truck a happy medium with the civic body on Thursday and slashed mutton price to Rs 650 per kg, putting an end to the long-drawn-out differences between them.

Association president Muslim Ali, however, said that the decision was taken keeping an eye on the situation arising out of COVID-19.

A year back, the price mutton was Rs 500 per kg in Guwahati. This had been a matter surprise among the mutton eaters in the State as to how the prices of the commodity rose to Rs 700 per kg within an year.

Mutton is not the only commodity whose price has risen steeply in the State. The prices of most of the commodities have risen alarmingly in the State after the outbreak of coronavirus.
