GUWAHATI: Cadets of 50 Assam Air Squadron NCC on April 11 cleaned the statue of Hemchandra Barua which is located inside the Gauhati University campus.

Hemchandra Barua was an eminent writer, editor, grammarian, lexicographer and social reformer of Assam. He was born in 1836 at Dergaon in Sivasagar district of Assam.

Through his writings, Barua proved that Assamese is a unique language. He created Hemkosh - the first Assamese dictionary. Considered as the father of Modern Assamese literature he was the first Assamese writer to utilize satire as the medium of expression. One of the first plays to be written in the Assamese language was his Kaniyar Kirtan (1861; "The Revels of an Opium Eater"), about opium addiction. His writings chiefly addressed social issues - for example Bahire Rongsong Bhitare Kowabhaturi (1861; Fair Outside and Foul Within). He wrote extensively on the Assamese Marriage System and opposed the religious restrictions on widow remarriage. He questioned if a man can remarry after the death of his wife, why can't a woman do the same after the demise of her husband?

After learning about the importance of the statue, the cadets of 50 Assam Air Squadron NCC, under the guidance of their Commanding Officer Group Captain Robin Vishoyi, volunteered to take up the cleaning of the statue. This is another way of teaching the NCC cadets the value of such eminent personalities and the importance of maintaining the statue so that generations can draw inspiration and instructions from their contributions to grow into good citizens, responsible human beings, inculcation of leadership qualities, creating competent volunteers to evolve as future guardians of the society. After witnessing the overwhelming enthusiasm of the cadets, their commanding officer announced that they would adopt another such statue which will further enhance the learning process and raise the consciousness for the upliftment of the society, stated a release.
