GUWAHATI: AGP president Atul Bora has said that new blood is being infused in the regional party with the rise in people's faith in it.

Over 200 people, including a number of former office-bearers of the AASU (All Assam Students' Union), joined the AGP at its headquarters here on Saturday.

Speaking at the function, Bora said, "The people of the State still believe the AGP as the pillar of regionalism in Assam. That's why a number of people who had deserted the party have returned to its fold now. A lobby had been working overtime to weaken the AGP. Even now such a lobby is out to weaken the party. However, the ground reality remains that our party has gained strength now. The pace at which new blood is being infused in the AGP has made us believe that the party will be stronger in the days ahead.

"The Congress destroyed Assam. The party ensured independence of India. However, gone are those days. The Congress is a very weak party now. If not, what has made it to ally with a party like the AIUDF? We're in an alliance with the BJP to defeat the Congress and its allies. The people of the State are happy with the alliance."

Former assistant general secretary of the AASU Monowar Hussain, literary secretary Anjan Kalita, executive member Simanta Thakuria, among others, joined the party.
