GUWAHATI: The GMC's (Guwahati Municipal Corporation) decision to relocate the dumping ground to Chandrapur has been opposed by the locals of the area.
In a protest organized by the Dumping Ground Birodhi Mancha, Chandrapur on Sunday, the AASU (All Assam Students' Union) and several other organizations took out a massive bike rally from Chandrapur High School Playground to West Mayong via Birkuchi Ramesh Tiniali.
Supporting the protest, AJYCP joint secretary Pradip Kalita appealed to the government to roll back its decision to shift the dumping ground to Chandrapur.
All Kamrup (Metro) District Students' Union general secretary Tutumoni Kalita said, "We will not accept the government's decision which has been taken by ignoring the views of the people. The government is trying to push Chandrapur into destruction for an indefinite time. We agree that the waste generated from Guwahati should be disposed of. But it is the responsibility of the GMC and the Assam government to do the same. We will not accept Chandrapur as the dumping ground at any cost."
Further, Kalita stressed that Chandrapur has the potential to be a tourist destination.
"Chandrapur should be developed as an eco-tourism spot. But on the contrary, they have shifted the dumping ground to Chandrapur. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma should visit this area and announce a package to develop the area and revive the industries. The areas should be evaluated to discover its potential as a tourist spot," added Kalita.
Dumping Ground Birodhi Mancha, Chandrapur convener Bishnuram Boro said, "We will intensify our agitation against the GMC if the government doesn't accept our demands."
Chandrapur Students' Union president Nitul Kalita said, "The agitation against the GMC and Assam government will continue. If our local MLA Atual Bora cannot shift the dumping ground from Chandrapur then he should resign from his post.
