Persons with Disabilities Decry for Education Facilities: Pratibandhi Surokhya Santha

STAFF REPORTER

GUWAHATI: The Pratibandhi Surokhya Santha along with Dristihin Parishad addressed their demand of establishing higher institutions for differently able students. It is to be noted that there is not enough facility of higher education in Assam for the disabled students for which they have to end their academic career after completing high school level.

After demanding for a long period of time for the upgradation of Guwahati Blind High School, Pramilarani Brahma announced to do the same after taking the responsibility of Social Welfare department. Even a decision was made on 4th May 2019 that until the Education department take the responsibility, the necessary expenditure will be borne by the Social Welfare department. But now The Education Department is neglecting the disabled people by denying any responsibility towards upgrading Guwahati Blind High School.

As claimed by Nripen Malakar, secretary, PSSA at a press meet held at Guwahati Press Club, “As per the order of Education Minister Siddhartha Bhattacharya, the Education Department has sent a letter on July 15, 2019 clearly mentioning that the Education Department will not provide any regular or contractual teachers. As long as the teaching and non-teaching staff, logistical support and infrastructure are concerned, the responsibility will be taken by the Social Welfare Department. The two of the organizations questioned, “Are the disabled students garbage for the Education Department and will they be deprived of their right to education just because they are differently able?” They also made it clear that if not taken any necessary actions by the government they may go to any extent.
