GUWAHATI: Popular Assamese singer Bhitali Das passed away here on Wednesday. She was 41 years old. She was recently infected with the Coronavirus and was admitted to the Kalapahar COVID Hospital on April 16.

However, before she breathed her last, she was tested COVID-19 negative.

State Health Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma stated that she was suffering from diabetes. Her last performance was at the Judges Field during a Bihu programme organized by the All Guwahati Students' Union on April 14.

The singer's death has been condoled by the artiste fraternity of the State along with different politicians and organizations. Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal, Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) president Atul Bora, AGP working president Keshab Mahanta, AGP general secretary Manoj Saikia, All Assam Students' Union, All Guwahati Students' Union, State Health Minister, Assam Pradesh Congress Committee president Ripun Bora, All Assam Minority Students' Union, among various others have expressed grief on the noted singer's demise.

She is survived by her husband and daughter. Her family members informed the media that the Kalapahar COVID Hospital authorities will decide on handing over her mortal remains to the family, only on Thursday morning.
