GUWAHATI: Prof (Dr) Goura Kishor Rath, former Chief of BRA, IRCH, All Indian Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi and Head of National Cancer Institute, India was conferred with the 'Shankar Lall Goenka Award of Dr B Borooah Cancer Institute (BBCI)' by Governor of Assam Prof Jagdish Mukhi on the World Health Day on Thursday. According to a press release, Prof Rath was awarded for his outstanding contribution in the field of oncology. The award carries a citation and Rs 1 lakh. The award has been instituted by Jeevan Ram Mungi Devi Goenka Public Charitable Trust, Guwahati. It may be stated here that, Sri Shankar Lall Goenka has made significant contribution for the promotion of Assamese cine industry and has actively collaborated with BBCI for community cancer control program. Dr Dhruba Jyoti Bora, Vice-Chancellor of Srimanta Sankardeva University of Health Sciences, was present on the occasion as the guest of honour.

Speaking on the occasion, Governor Mukhi said that in the recent Budget session of the Parliament, the Finance Minister of India earmarked Rs 129 crore for the establishment of adult and paediatric blood cancer facilities at the BBCI. The institute has already started Bone Marrow Transplantation, which is the first of its kind in the public sector hospital in the entire Northeastern Region. BBCI has also brought out a journal 'Annals of Oncology Research and Therapy' to provide a platform for publication of research work on cancer. The holistic approach to treatment of cancer with care, compassion and empathy is the need of the hour for a better quality of life. It is, therefore, important to offer value-based care to patients. BBCI has contributed significantly for the cancer care in the Northeastern Region. He laid emphasis on the public awareness for cancer prevention and control.
