GUWAHATI: The Asom Sattra Mahasabha on Saturday blamed the state government for keeping silent on the recent "smear campaign" against the Assamese language in the Barak valley. The Mahasabha on Saturday said that the people of the state are worried about the activities of the anti-Assamese while holding the government responsible for the "ultimate insult" to the Assamese language.

"The previous Congress government made a mistake by recognizing official language status to Bengali in Barak Valley and now the present government is making a mistake by remaining silent against the attack on the Assamese language.

Those people who had insulted the Assamese language should have been meted out exemplary punishment. If the Assamese language is regularly insulted in Barak Valley, then I don't find any fault in Dr Nagen Saikia's statement that Barak Valley should be separated from Assam if anti-Assamese sentiments continue," Asom Sattra Mahasabha general secretary Kusum Kumar Mahanta said.

He further said that Assam was probably the only state in India where one can propagate any language and also set up schools in their own language.

"We have not seen the Assamese language prevalent in other states.

It is quite unfortunate for us. We urge the state government and the proprietors of non-Assamese schools to introduce the Assamese language. If required the state government should not hesitate to bring strong laws for the implementation of the Assamese language. Otherwise, people will be compelled to start another movement for safeguarding the identity of the Assamese people."
