GUWAHATI: The Assam Human Rights Commission (AHRC) on Wednesday issued notices directing the Jorhat Upper Assam Division Commissioner to cause an enquiry in two cases - death of Jayanta Bora and Baghjan oil well blowout.

The AHRC has directed the Commissioner to cause an enquiry to find out the circumstances leading to the tragic death of a youth, Jayanta Bora, aged about 30 years, under Pulibor Police Station in Jorhat district. The Commission took a suo moto cognizance of newspaper reports appearing in a section of the media dated 16.06.2020 alleging the custodial death of the youth who was picked up by Army from 244 Field Regiment and Police Team jointly from his house on Sunday night on charges of being an ULFA cadre/member and was brought to Borholia Police Station.

The report is to be submitted within 30 days from the receipt of the notice. In another case, the Commission issued notice to the Commissioner, Upper Assam Division, Jorhat to cause an enquiry into the status of about seven thousand people currently being housed across 12 relief camps arising out of the fire at the Baghjan Oil well where two firefighters also lost their lives.

The Commission received complaint from one Hurojit Moran and which was also reported in a news website. As reported, the condition of the relief camps is pathetic and pitiable. There is also lack of food and drinking water facility, etc., stated a release.
