Submit details of tenants, domestic helpers: Assam Police appeals to citizens

GUWAHATI: The gruesome murder of an elderly couple in the Beltola, Chandanagar area of the city has once again highlighted how important it is for citizens to submit details of their tenants and domestic helpers to the area police station. A high-ranking police official said, "We keep requesting citizens to submit details of their tenants and domestic helpers in the police station now and then. We always seek tenants' verification forms from landlords but people's response in this matter is poor. Very few landlords give us details of their tenants and domestic helpers. We come across many cases where domestic helpers and tenants commit crimes like murder, rape, drugs trade and robbery and we face problems in our investigation because their details had not been submitted by the landlords."

While renting out property, landlords often choose to ignore the important aspect of tenant verification. Citizens must realize that police verification of their tenants is important for their safety and security. It has often been seen that people with dubious records rent property and commit various criminal activities. Similarly, while employing domestic helpers, people must submit their identification and address proof to the police. If any crime is committed by them, it becomes easier for the police to track them down. The police official further said, "When police verification is completed, tenants will fear scared to indulge in criminal activities. They will also feel scared to indulge in drug consumption, excessive drinking and brazen behaviour. If police have details of tenants and domestic helpers, it becomes easy to conduct the investigation when a crime is committed. So we again appeal to citizens to verify the particulars of their tenants and domestic helpers and to submit all such details to the police."
