Teachers, other employees to take out pada yatra for Old Pension System

GUWAHATI: Various teachers and other employees' associations have decided to take to the streets as the State Government is still reluctant to restore the Old Pension System (OPS) for the officers, teachers, police personnel and employees.

Addressing the media today, All Assam Government NPS Employees' Association (AAGNPSEA) president Achyutananda Hazarika said that on August 22, 2022, the employees of the State government raised their protest against the government's reluctance to restore the OPS through a one-day non-cooperation demonstration. "Since the government is willfully avoiding the issue, officers, teachers, police personnel and employees residing in the state will take out a daylong Pada Yatra on November 8, 2022, to Dispur. At least 50,000 employees, teachers, officers, 100 employee leaders from across the country and representatives of 100 leaders from various State Government employees/ teachers organizations and prominent personalities of the state will walk for the restoration of OPS. This is the unanimous decision of 'joutha sanmilan' held today in the state office of Assam College Teachers' Association, Guwahati," said Hazarika.

"A definite pension is a right for a government employee. On August 22, 2022, all officers, employees, teachers, and police personnel demonstrated and demanded before the government in one voice to restore the Old Pension System for all officers, employees, teachers, and police personnel of Assam. In the last month, no response has come from the government. It is surprising. We are not sure whether the decision makers understand the issue or if they are waiting for a social crisis for NPS. But the employees of Assam cannot wait. We are starting a series of democratic demonstrations and pada yatra," Hazarika said.

Hazarika said that more than 120 teachers and employees' associations would support AAGNPSEA in all activities.
