GUWAHATI: A proposal to reassess the traffic management system in Guwahati was put forward at a meeting held on Wednesday in the city.
The meeting was chaired by State Housing and Urban Affairs Minister Ashok Singhal. Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) Mayor Mrigen Sarania, GMC Commissioner, Guwahati Police Commissioner Harmeet Singh, the managing director of Guwahati Smart City Ltd, managing director of the Assam State Transport Commissioner (ASTC), Guwahati Traffic Police deputy commissioner, the District Transport Officer (DTO) and officials of the Transport Department attended the meeting.
In the meeting, minister Singhal said that a special committee would be constituted to reassess the traffic management system of the city. The committee will determine the new city bus stops. To manage the traffic congestion in the city, some roads will be converted to one-way routes. The committee will also determine the time buses will be allowed to halt at each bus stop and the duration between two buses at each bus stop.
The minister also directed the Guwahati traffic police to start issuing e-challans from November 7. He also directed the GMC to assess whether the street vendors on the main roads of the city can be shifted to some other place. In the meeting, it was also decided that trains passing through the city should reduce their speed and new signboards should be put up at bus stops.
