Non-payment of vehicle tax and non-renewal of papers may make owners cough up heavy penalty

GUWAHATI: The Transport Department will start a massive drive – Abhiyan Kurukshetra – against the vehicle owners defaulting arrear tax and renewal of vehicle documents.
Gautam Das, Assistant Transport Commissioner, said, "For the greater interest of road safety, we have taken this measure. We have repeatedly asked the vehicle owners to clear their dues and renew their papers. However, many vehicle owners have not heeded our request. We have set the deadline of January 31 to make them pay dues and renew papers."
He said, "We have formed a high-level team for Abhiyan Kurukshetra to crack down on defaulters. Vehicle owners, who will get caught in the crackdown, will have to cough up the heavy penalty. If need be, we may resort to cancelling vehicle licenses."
He said, "When vehicle owners don't update their documents, we treat their vehicles as illegal. If they don't update the fitness of their vehicles, how can we know those vehicles are fit for roads? Such vehicles may lead to accidents. The Chief Minister has been instructing us to make the state accident-free. We are following the instructions we have received from the CM."
