Ugratara Temple 's Main Idol Stolen; Investigations On

Guwahati: In a sensational incident the main Astadhatu idol of Goddess Ugratara that was inside the 'Saktipeeth' Ugratara Temple has been stolen in the early hours today from the heart of the Guwahati city, in the Uzan Bazar area.

The thieves vandalized the temple and took away the main idol besides valuables and offerings.

According to reports, when the priest of the temple opened the temple doors he found the idol missing and all items vandalized. It may be mentioned that the temple is barely 200 meters from the Latasil Police Station.

CCTV footage has revealed four thieves were involved in the incident who were seen to be happily running away with all the looted valuables. As the news spread, devotees and locals in the area immediately gathered at the temple in utter shock and disbelief.

The temple authorities have lodged a complaint in the Latasil Police Station. Police is investigating the matter.

The idol has been worshipped in the temple since 1044 AD and the temple is revered as one of the 51 holy places of pilgrimage for the Hindus in the country.
