Uzan Bazar Fish Market Under Water

GUWAHATI: While the water level of Brahmaputra has become a matter of concern, the Uzan bazar fish market is also under water. As the fish market is totally under water, the fishmongers have placed their shops in the footpath.

Speaking to The Sentinel, Munna Prasad who looks after the fish market said, “I have not witnessed such situation since 2004”. He also added he remembers a similar situation occurred in the year 1987 and if the water level keeps on increasing, the people of Guwahati may go through the repetition of the flood occurred in 1987 and 2004. He also said, “By looking at the increasing water level it can be said that the fishmongers will have to go through a tough phase, now we are selling fish coming from Barpeta and Marigaon district. It should be mentioned that on July 14, the Water level of the Brahmaputra was 50.30 Meter till 8 am. Sadequl Houqe, W/S Grade 2 of Central Water Commission said, “The water level has increased from 50.30 meter to 50.85 meter this morning.” He said the danger level is 49.68 meter and the water level is increasing continuously per hour, if it keeps on increasing a repetition of 2004 may occur.
