GUWAHATI: Several organizations staged protests in support of various demands at Chachal here in concert with the first day of the budget session of the Assam Legislative Assembly on Monday.

The organizations included the All Koch-Rajbongshi Students' Union (AKRSU), All Assam Newly Provincialized ME/MEM Schools Provincialization Eligible Grade-IV Employees Association, All Assam Additional Pre-Primary (Ka-Shreni) Teachers Association and All Assam Griha Rakshi Volunteers Welfare Association.

The AKRSU staged a three-hour hunger-strike and demanded urgent resolution of the problems of the Koch-Rajbongshi community. Its primary demand was settlement of the Kamatapur issue by way of grant of ST status to the community. AKRSU also demanded allocation of Rs 300 crore for the Kamatapur Autonomous Council.

The All Assam Newly Provincialized ME/MEM Schools Provincialization Eligible Grade-IV Employees Association demanded that the Chief Minister should make public the date by which the appointment will made of 2,107 eligible Grade-IV employees of newly-provincialized ME/MEM schools of the State. It also demanded that their salaries be paid with retrospective effect from January 1, 2021.

The All Assam Additional Pre-Primary (Ka-Shreni) Teachers Association demanded that the system of sidelining its members from their respective schools and placing their respective responsibilities on the shoulders of Anganwadi workers be stopped forthwith. It also demanded that long-serving members be awarded the status of experienced teachers.

The All Assam Griha Rakshi Volunteers Welfare Association demanded that the Assam Home Guards Act, 1947 which was amended in 2015, should be amended once again to pave the way for regularization of the services of serving Home Guard volunteers. It also demanded scrapping of the Homeguard Deployment Software System. It may be mentioned that the home guard volunteers have been staging protests for the last six days.
