Ward Councilor Sasanka Deka Exits BJP Over Appointment Of Guwahati Mayor

Guwahati: Bharatiya Janata Party's Sanaka Deka who emerged victorious as councillor in the recently concluded Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) election from Ward no 38 has reportedly quit the party on May 4.

His decision comes after former Mayor Mrigen Sarania was proclaimed as the new mayor of Guwahati and his name was announced after the councillors conducted a meeting in Guwahati on May 4.

This decision did not go down well with Sanaka Deka after he actively lobbied for the post with BJP's top brass in Guwahati. Sasanka Deka told local media that Mrigen Sarania was chosen instead of him.

The disgruntled leader who got recently elected as the Ward Councillor from Ward no 38 confessed to the media that he did ask for the Mayor position but the party did not give it to him.

He added that the party informed him that the new Mayor was selected keeping the electoral process in mind but he did not accept the decision.

He went on to say that he expected to get the Mayor position but he did admit that it is perhaps early days for him as he is young and does not meet the required eligibility as of now.

The local media asked about his next political destination, to which he responded by saying that he has not yet given a thought about it as he is young and has plenty of time to pave his way after reflection and due deliberations.

The newly elected Ward Councillor stated that he will now have to focus on other work and decide his future in due time and he informed that he will discuss with his well-wishers and decide his future course of action.

When pressed about the matter, he revealed that he did not get the post of Mayor despite the fact that he enjoyed the support of Asom Gana Parishad (AGP).

He alleged that the AGP, who is allied with the BJP, backed him as the new Mayor, but AGP's recommendations were not taken into consideration before making the big call.

He further alleged that top party leaders like Siddhartha Bhattacharya, Atul Bora and Queen Ojha were not even consulted before the decision to appoint to pick Mrigen Sarania as the new Mayor was taken.
