GUWAHATI: Life in Guwahati city was thrown out of gear on Wednesday as a downpour created artificial floods and forced pedestrians and vehicles to navigate their way through knee-deep water on the roads.

Only 20 minutes of rainfall led to several areas of the city being partially submerged by flood water. The RG Baruah road, Chandmari, Dispur, Geetanagar and Hatigaon were badly affected by the rainfall and flood water caused numerous traffic jams.

Residents of the city have been suffering for a long time due to artificial floods, but no effective step has been taken by the Government to resolve the problem.

Guwahati Development Department Minister Ashok Singhal said that the Government has initiated steps to combat this problem, but it will take another three years or so to rid Guwahati of artificial floods.
