If the situation is not improved then waterlogging and flash floods are certain this year.

According to an official from the Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC), due to the Model Code of Conduct, the tendering to clean the drains couldn't be floated this year. However, the GMC workers have started the drainage cleaning exercise on their own, the official said.

"We will float the tender after the declaration of poll results on May 2. We have also requested the Election Commission of India to allow us to float the tender before May 2. Meanwhile, the GMC workers are cleaning the clogged drains and the process is expected to be completed before the monsoon," the official stated.

The official also held the citizens responsible for dumping plastic and garbage into the open drains. He appealed to the people not to dump garbage into drains as it is the main reason for drainage congestion.
