GUWAHATI: A highly impactful street play was performed by ' Mime and Movement' group to start off the proceedings of World AIDS Day 2021 thereby creating awareness among the public here in Srimanta Sankardeva Kalakshetra on wednesday.

End Inequalities, End AIDS, End Pandemics is the theme for this year.

"Along with AIDS, we are fighting for a state free from Malaria and Tuberculosis, and we are on a right track" says minister of Family and Health Welfare Keshab Mahanta. "This is not a one day festival, we are planning for the whole year to create awareness", he added. The Minister urges people to come out, speak and test themselves and he conveys the message that AIDS is noncurable but it is not deadly.

Shri Anurag Goel, project director of Assam State AIDS Control Society (ASACS), Dr Lakshmanan S, director of family welfare and Renowned Actor Aimee Baruah were also present on the gracious occasion. Nirala Devi, Bhaktirno Bhattacharya and Drunu Bhuyan were felicitated on this occasion for their untiring efforts in the field of HIV.

"Sexual intercourse is not only the medium of transmission of this disease but unsafe blood is also a factor of risk" says Anurag Goel. He further added that Assam is categorised as a low HIV Prevalence state with an estimated adult HIV Prevalence of 0.09% which is lower than the National Prevalence of 0.22% but Assam is also highly vulnerable for HIV transmission as it the gateway for the northeastern states. Assam is surrounded by three high prevalence states of Manipur, Mizoram and Nagaland. Notably, according to the data of National AIDS Control Programme (NACP), Assam has able to test 67,15,121 persons till 31st oct, 2021 and 20,841 numbers of cases has been diagnosed as HIV positive out of which 19030 are General clients and 1811 are pregnant women.
