North Korea is cracking down on residents wearing leather trench coats, saying it shows disrespect to the country's leader Kim Jong Un.

After Kim wore one on TV in 2019, leather trench coats became fashionable in 2019. Real leather jackets imported from China were initially sought after by the wealthy, but soon after, clothing manufacturers began importing imitation leather to manufacture them in the United States.

Almost every North Korean market soon had them on sale, and many young guys could be seen wearing their own synthetic leather slickers. Merchants selling them and people wearing they are now facing a crackdown from the authorities.

Another leather-clad TV appearance from Kim Jong-un this year did little to curb enthusiasm for the coat, which has become a popular fashion among the North Korean elite who could afford real leather.

According to Radio Free Asia, the police said that wearing clothes designed to look like the Highest Dignity is an impure trend to challenge the authority of the Highest Dignity.

Radio Free Asia also informed that fake versions of the garment first began appearing in September when unofficial trade between China and North Korea was reopened following a shut-down during the Covid pandemic.

Citizens were instructed not to wear leather coats as its part of the party directive to decide who can wear them.

Leather jackets, as opposed to full-length trench coats, have actually been worn in North Korea since the early 2000s, popularized by illegally smuggled South Korean films which circulate in provincial cities.
