Istanbul/Greece: A massive earthquake struck the Aegean Sea and was felt in both Greece and Turkey on Friday, leveling off structures in the easternTurkish city of Izmir. Several other buildings collapsed in the coastal province of Izmir.

At least four people died and 120 people were injured in the quake, as per initial reports.

Turkey said the magnitude was at 6.6. At least 12 people had died and 419 were injured in the city of Izmir. On Samos, the place hit by the quake in Greece, two teenagers were killed.

The shallow tremor triggered a mini-tsunami that flooded Izmir and Samos, global media reports said.

Quoted in a media report Eftyhmios Lekkas, the head of Greece's organization for anti-seismic planning said, residents of the Greek island of Samos, which has a population of around 45,000, were advised to stay away from coastal areas.

A Greek spokesperson said some of the old buildings on the island were destroyed with no specific reports of casualties.

Photos shared on social media and footage aired on state television channel showed civilians being pulled from under the rubble.

The quake was felt in Istanbul, 200 miles northeast of Izmir, and in areas of Greece but more of the original destruction appeared to be concentrated on Izmir.

More than 17,000 people were killed in August 1999 when Izmit, a town southeast of Istanbul, was struck by a 7.6 magnitude quake and in 2011, more than 500 people were killed in the quake in the eastern city of Van.
