Rise of COVID-19 cases in northeast of UK ahead of Tier 3 decision

In the seven days leading to December 8, four out of the 12 council areas in the Northern region has reported between a 2.1% and 15.6% rise in cases

London: The Public Health Data, made available on December 14, has shown the areas of England where the number of new COVID-19 cases has increased, based on the week before.

Just before a decision on whether the region will continue under Tier 3 restrictions, official data has revealed that there is an upward trend in cases. In the seven days leading to December 8, four out of the 12 council areas in the northern region has reported between a 2.1% and 15.6% rise in cases.

Areas in Tyne and Wear and on Teesside also witnessed a rise in new cases, while the rest of the region has continued to see a fall in the graph. It comes as the government is this week set to reveal whether the northeast will remain under the strictest tier of local lockdown restrictions.

The data provided below is accurate at the time of publication in the seven days to December 8 as compared with the seven days to December 1. The number of cases this week in Gateshead is 174 with the Covid-19 infection rate at 86.1 per 100,000 people. Cases have been reported to go down by 31.5%.

In the North Tyneside, the number of cases this week is 262 with an infection rate of 126.0 per 100,000 people. 126.0 per 100,000 people is the infection rate and 25.5% cases have been reported to go down.

Newcastle's number of cases this week is 339 with an infection rate of 111.9 per 100,000 people and 25.5% cases have been reported to go down.

A number of cases in Stockton this week is 309 with an infection rate of 156.6 per 100,000 people. Cases are down by 15.65.

Darlington has reported 213 number of cases with an infection rate of 199.4 per 100,000 people and 14.1% cases have been down.

County Durham has recorded a case of 819 this week with an infection rate of 154.5 per 100,000 people. 4.3% of cases have been down. Whereas in Hartlepool, the number of cases this week has been 227 with an infection rate of 242.4 per 100,000 people. 4.2% of cases have reported being down.

514 cases this week in Northumberland with an infection rate of 159.4 per 100,000 people. Cases are down by 1.5%.

The number of cases in Middlesbrough has increased to 282 this week with an infection rate of 200 per 100,000 people. Cases are up by 15.6%. In South Tyneside, the number of cases this week is 384 with an infection rate of 254.3 per 100,000 people. Cases have been up by 14.3%.

In Sunderland, the number of cases this week is 466 and the infection rate has been 167.8 per 100,000 people. Cases have been up by 12.0%

In Redcar and Cleveland, the number of cases this week is 197 whereas infection rate is 143.6 per 100,000 people and cases are up by 21.1%
