The World Celebrates International Men's Day Today

GUWAHATI: International Men's Day is celebrated every year on 19th November to honour the men and to celebrate their warmth and strength in our lives. Every year there is a particular theme for this occasion, and this year it is "Helping Men and Boy".

The day recognises men who are not just great contributors of their families and society, but also who brings about positive values in the world. While we keep bringing up talks about women empowerment and their uplift in the society, it is also very important to highlight the spirited men behind the overall empowerment of women.

Just like "Behind every successful man is a woman" similarly "Behind every successful woman is a supportive man". The roles of 'men' and 'women' are stereotypically constructed by the society from a very old period. Men have been compelled to not show their emotions and vulnerabilities in the outside world, because it may come out as very 'unmanly'.

On the other hand, the new age men who are breaking down the irrelevant stereotypical norms of the society, needs complete support and recognition. This new age men should be celebrated as they can be the role models for others. The world is imperfect, therefore rather than forcing society determined standards of perfection, this International Men's Day should celebrate men's uniqueness and individuality.

We don't talk much about the dedication and contribution of men in every role they play, as a father, as a son or as a husband. Every individual should try and break this circle and stop promoting 'toxic masculinity'.

Dr. Jeroma Teelucksingh, a history lecturer at the University of the West Indies in Trinidad and Tobago, founded the International Men's Day project on 19th November 1999. He used this day to celebrate the birth anniversary of his father initially but later on encouraged everyone to use this day to put forward the issues concerning men and boys.
