Sharad Purnima or Kojagiri Purnima is regarded as a harvest festival that is celebrated by Hindus on the full moon day of the Ashwin month, the Hindu lunar month. Sharad Purnima falls in the autumn season during the Sharad Ritu and marks the end of the monsoon season.

On this day it is believed that the moon gets totally illuminated and the beams provide healing and restoring powers that purifies and nourishes the body as well as the soul. On the Sharad Purnima, the Moon is said to appear in 16 of its phases or Kalas and each of the Kala signifies a virtue. It is very interesting that Shri Krishna was endowed and favoured with the 16 Kalas.

It is believed that on this full moon day along with the moon people also worship many divine couples like Shiv-Parvati, Radha-Krishna and Lakshmi Narayan. They make important offerings like varieties of flowers and kheer to enjoy more blessings. The Rice kheer is a very integral part of offerings which is a very famous Indian sweet consists of a mixture of rice, sugar and cow milk. This rice kheer after cooking on the night of the Sharad Purnima is kept in the light that comes from the moon as it is said that this will bring energy and strength to the sweet. It is then in the next morning used as Prasad and shared to eat among the family members and other visitors hoping well-being.

Devotees on this day keep fast or vrath as it is regarded as the best day to worship Satya Narayan form of Lord Vishnu or the family deity.

• The Purnima Tithi starts from evening 07:03 PM on 19 October, Tuesday and stops at 08:26 PM on 20 October, Wednesday.

• The moon on Tuesday is expected to be visible by 5:20 PM evening

• The proper time to perform the important puja or ritual of Sharad Purnima is 11:41 PM on 19 October to 12:31 AM, 20 October
