The position of the kitchen and the bedroom plays an important part in marital relationships. Defective water bodies at northwest and southeast also have similar influences. Both the north and the south directions have effects on women.

The salient features of houses facing north and south have been discussed earlier. Ancient Hindu customs suggest certain rules for married women to follow.

1) Married women should wear red bindi on their foreheads along with vermilion. It has become a fashion now not to sport these thereby losing the love of the husband.

2) The mangalsutra is a powerful jewellery. This should be worn which earns the respect of the husband.

3) Red is a very potent and vibrant colour. Anyone wearing red clothes gets noticed very fast. It is an old custom for Hindu brides (specially in North India) to wear a red dress on her wedding day. So married women may wear red clothes to keep their husbands attracted to them!

4) The custom of keeping a fast on Karwa Chauth for the protection of the husband and prolonging his life makes the husband know that his wife cares for him. It is done a few days before Diwali.

5) Married women should never sleep with their hair open. It is believed that negative forces are more active in darkness and they may creep inside open hair!

KITCHEN VAASTU

In the kitchen food is prepared for us which in turn gives us energy and nutrients required for all round growth. Items or objects which are unused for more than a year should be thrown out as they attract

negative energy. Broken or chipped crockery and utensils should be discarded for similar reasons.

Cleanliness must be maintained in the kitchen. Cupboards should be regularly cleaned to remove cluttering of negative energy. Waste baskets should be emptied at regular intervals and kept out of sight.

Morning sunrays have the power to destroy lot of bacteria and germs. So Vaastu recommends the kitchen at southeast. There should not be any water pipelines near or over the stove because fire and water do not go side by side.

The gas stove and the wash basin should not be close to each other as the opposite elements may create conflict. The refrigerator is best at south west opening to east or north. The heavy items like grains, oils, steel utensils. etc., should be kept at southwest, south or west.

Many people have the habit of storing cooked food for days in the fridge. Cooked. This should be avoided. The best way to clean the fridge is by using vinegar or lemon and vanilla essence.

The ideal colours for the kitchen walls are white, yellow, cream, pastel colours and light brown. Lemon yellow, orange or green can be used for cabinets. For cabinets at south, red can be used. For kitchen slabs, quartz or granite are best but avoid dark colours like black.
