SHILLONG: The East Khasi Hills district administration has introduced the odd-even number system for plying of vehicles in the rural areas except Shillong agglomeration from May 11.

While vehicles with registration ending in even numbers will be allowed to ply on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, vehicles with odd numbers will be allowed to run on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays.

"No transport and non-transport vehicles will be allowed to ply on Sundays," East Khasi Hills Deputy Commissioner, Matsiewdor War Nongbri said.

It may be mentioned that the State government on May 9, the government has decided to allow 50 per cent of public transportation as well as private transport except in Shillong urban agglomeration.

"No transport vehicles and non-transport vehicles are permitted to ply within Shillong urban agglomeration area until further orders," the Deputy Commissioner said.

Nongbri said that this arrangement of transport and non-transport vehicles on rotation basis will continue till further orders.

The Deputy Commissioner also directed that vehicles are to strictly utilise only 50 per cent capacity.

"While small four-wheelers will have to ply with only two passengers besides the driver, pillion rider is not allowed with respect to two-wheelers.

"The driver and passengers are to strictly ensure the social-distancing norms, wearing of masks at all times, use of gloves, hand sanitisers and to strictly follow all other advisories of the Health and Family Welfare Department," Nongbri said.
