Polythene menace

Surprising it may sound, despite the ban imposed on the use of polythene, Guwahati city is not going to become completely polythene free. The government drives like sealing godowns, seizing polythene and realizing fines will serve no purpose unless an alternative compostable environment-friendly material is provided to the people to shun the use of polythene.

Further, the government has imposed the ban but on the other hand no positive step has been taken to stop the manufacture of polythene. The government should adopt realistic measures by banning the manufacture of polythene and side by side the import of polythene bags from neighbouring States should be immediately stopped.

The existing polythene manufacturing factories should be directed by the government to manufacture only environment-friendly materials instead of polythene which is a menace to the society.

For greater advantage of the people of Assam, this important issue may be discussed with experts for appropriate suggestion for replacement of polythene by alternative compostable environment-friendly material to shun the use of polythene.

Rate of interest on RIDF loan

It has come to our notice on a news item published in the front page of your esteem daily on September 8, 2020 headlined 'RURAL INFRASTRUCTURE DEVELOPMENT FUND – Dispur to borrow Rs 338 crore from NABARD'.

In this connection, we would like to bring to your attention to the last line of the third paragraph of the news which reads as "the current rate is estimated to be 3.90%." This is incorrect. The present rate of interest (RoI) on our RIDF loan as on the date of publication of the news item is 2.75%, and not 3.90%.
