Traditional Kashmiri theatre inspires students, promotes cultural values in Srinagar

In an effort to reconnect young people with Kashmir’s cultural heritage, a traditional Kashmiri theatre performance was staged for students at the Kashmir Harvard Educational Institute on the outskirts of Srinagar.

Organised by the Mehak Dramatic Club with support from the Ministry of Culture, Government of India, the programme aimed to promote theatre, preserve the Kashmiri language and raise cultural awareness among students.

Written by playwright Reshi Rasheed, the play focused on family relationships, traditional values, cultural identity and the importance of preserving heritage amid rapid modernisation and changing lifestyles. It also highlighted concerns over the growing use of digital devices and the declining engagement of young people with books, their mother tongue and cultural activities.

The performance received an enthusiastic response from students and teachers. Organisers said theatre can serve not only as entertainment but also as a medium for education, social awareness and the preservation of local languages and traditions.

Theatre director Farhat Sidiq called for similar performances to be organised in more schools, while senior theatre artist Shabir Hakak stressed the need for workshops and initiatives to encourage the next generation to take up the art form.

The programme highlighted growing efforts to engage young audiences in preserving Kashmir’s theatrical and cultural traditions. (ANI)
