New York: India, France Condemn Deadly Attacks on UNIFIL Peacekeepers in Lebanon; Paris Seeks UNSC Emergency Meet.
India and France have strongly condemned the recent deadly attacks on United Nations peacekeepers serving with the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) in southern Lebanon, with Paris calling for an emergency meeting of the United Nations Security Council.
India's Permanent Representative to the UN, Parvathaneni Harish, said peacekeepers operate under difficult conditions with a UN mandate in conflict zones and stressed that their safety and security must remain a top priority. In a post on X, he underlined that peacekeeping represents "multilateralism in action" and noted that India had piloted UNSC Resolution 2589 to ensure accountability for crimes against peacekeepers. India joined the international community in condemning the attacks on UNIFIL personnel and paid homage to the fallen "Blue Helmets."
Meanwhile, France urged the immediate convening of the Security Council following what it described as "extremely serious incidents" involving UNIFIL personnel. French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot condemned a series of attacks, including one that killed an Indonesian peacekeeper and injured three others, as well as a subsequent explosion that left two more Indonesian peacekeepers dead and two wounded.
