Pakistan: Father Of The Country's Nuclear Programme Abdul Qadeer Khan Dies Due To Illness

Islamabad: On Sunday, Abdul Qadeer Khan, passes away after a brief illness at 85.

According to news reports, the man, who is also credited for developing Pakistan's nuclear programme, was rushed to the hospital after he complained of difficulty in breathing. 

He was admitted to the Khan Research Laboratories Hospital where he was pronounced dead at 7 am.

Khan has been living under house arrest under the watch of security agencies after he was declared responsible for a nuclear technology proliferation 2004.

Originally born in Bhopal in the year 1936, Khan had migrated to Pakistan along with his family during the Partition in 1947.

Many influential leaders of Pakistan offered their condolences on social media.

 Pakistan's President Arif Alvi tweeted, "Deeply saddened to learn about the passing of Dr Abdul Qadeer Khan. Had known him personally since 1982. He helped us develop nation-saving nuclear deterrence, and a grateful nation will never forget his services in this regard. May Allah bless him."

Imran Khan, a former cricketer and Prime Minister of Pakistan, tweeted, "Deeply saddened by the passing of Dr A Q Khan. He was loved by our nation bec of his critical contribution in making us a nuclear weapon state. This has provided us security against an aggressive much larger nuclear neighbour. For the people of Pakistan he was a national icon."

According to sources, Khan will be buried in Faisal Mosque in Islamabad, where funeral prayers will be offered at 3 pm (PST).
