VARANASI: A temple believed to be 250 years old has recently been found in the Muslim-majority Madanpura locality of Varanasi. According to a Hindu organization, the Sanatan Raksha Dal, the temple identified as Siddheshwar Mahadev Temple has remained locked for more than 70 years. The group, on December 16, in a bid to revive religious practices, attempted to unlock the site and highlighted the long-closed structure.
The discovery was sparked by the circulation of an image on social media showing the temple gate locked. Following this, Sanatan Raksha Dal members approached local authorities, urging them to facilitate prayers at the site.
"We have informed the district administration, which is currently reviewing the matter," said Gaurav Banswal, Varanasi’s Deputy Commissioner of Police. He assured that all legal procedures would be followed before any action is taken, while police forces are stationed at the place to maintain order.
The temple, which adjoins a businessman's residence, was found to be in a good condition with no reported damage. In response, Ajay Sharma, state president of the Sanatan Raksha Dal, requested Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath's intervention, pushing for the temple's opening and a subsequent prayer session. Uttar Pradesh Deputy CM Keshav Prasad Maurya also signaled that worship would soon take place at the temple. This event follows a similar incident in Sambhal where an ancient temple was reopened last week.
