SRIBHUMI: South Sribhumi erupted in protests on Monday following allegations of major irregularities in the draft voter list of the Shree Bhumi Panchayat. Led by local MLA Siddique Ahmed, around a hundred residents gathered at the dharna shed, accusing authorities of deliberately manipulating voter records.

MLA Siddique Ahmed later submitted a memorandum to the Deputy Commissioner, alleging that approximately 50,000 names, including his own, had been unfairly removed from the voter list.

Ahmed expressed grave concern over glaring discrepancies, including cases where entire polling stations were allegedly assigned to a single voter. He claimed these irregularities were not accidental but deliberately orchestrated at the district level under specific directives.

Addressing the demonstrators, Ahmed stressed the urgency of rectifying the discrepancies in the voter list. He cautioned that if the issue was not resolved promptly, it would spark widespread protests across the district, highlighting its critical importance for democratic integrity.

The allegations have raised serious concerns among South Sribhumi residents, many of whom fear being disenfranchised in the upcoming elections. While the district administration has yet to respond officially, growing pressure indicates that the issue will remain a central topic in the region's political discourse.

Meanwhile, earlier this month, protests gained momentum across Sribhumi in Assam, where some youths painted Bangladesh's flag on roads in several localities, protesting over the abuse of the Indian national flag and the persecution of Hindu minority groups in Bangladesh.

As a mark of strong protest, vehicles ran over the painted flag on the roads. The protesters criticized the interim Bangladeshi government for failure to address violence against Hindus, warning of intensified protests if things do not change.
