Amit Shah Asks BJP Leaders To Explain Within 10 Days Over Godse Remark

Guwahati: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) President Amit Shah today denied backing the statements made by the party leaders in support of Nathuram Godse, the assassin of Mahatma Gandhi.

Amit Shah also stated that the disciplinary committee will seek an explanation from all the three leaders who have made a comment on Nathuram Godse. The leaders are Ananthkumar Hegde, Sadhvi Pragya Thakur and Nalin Kateel and the disciplinary committee will submit the report to the party within 10 days.

Shah further stated that the statements of AnanthkumarHegde, Pragya Thakur and Nalin Kateel are their personal opinion and the party has nothing to do with it. The leaders have also withdrawn their statements and apologized but BJP has taken their statements seriously and sent these statements to the disciplinary committee to investigate on the issue..

BJP candidate from Bhopal, Pragya Thakur made a controversial remark terming assassin of Mahatma Gandhi, Nathuram Godse as ‘patriot.’ She said, “Nathuram Godse was a patriot, is a patriot and will remain a patriot,” when she was questioned about Kamal Haasan’s remark that India’s first terrorist was a Hindu, referring to Godse.

Pragya Thakur, later apologized to the party for her remark on Godse. The opposition also demanded an apology from Thakur following the remark who is pitched against Digvijay Singh of Congress in Bhopal.

In a tweet, union minister Anant Kumar Hegde said, “Am glad that seven decades later today’s generation debates in a changed perceptional environment and gives good scope for the condemned to be heard upon. Nathuram Godse would have finally felt happy with this debate.”

Hegde later deleted the tweet after BJP distanced itself from the remarks by the leader and posted, “My twitter account has been breached twice in the past one week and certain tweets have been posted on my timeline which has been discarded and deleted. Regret the posts attributed to me.”

Meanwhile, Nalin Kateel had tweeted amid a raging controversy over Pragya Thakur on her remark over Godse. In Nalin’s tweet he said, “Godse killed one, Kasab killed 72, Rajiv Gandhi killed 17,000. You judge who is crueler in this?”
