Andhra CM Announces Visakhapatnam as the New Capital

NEW DELHI: Speaking at an international meet in New Delhi, the Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh YS Jagan Mohan Reddy indirectly announced that Visakhapatnam will be the new capital of the state. This announcement also indicated the cancellation of the previous plan of the state government to create the necessary amenities in Amaravati.

Hyderabad was the old capital of the state of Andhra Pradesh, but with the bifurcation of the state into Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, a new capital city became essential for this south Indian state. The state government had initially planned to develop Amaravati city on the banks of the Krishna river into its new capital. But nine years after the division of the state, YS Jagan Mohan Reddy announced Vishakhapatnam as the new capital instead in a meeting held on Tuesday.

Speaking on the occasion of the International Diplomatic Alliance in New Delhi, the CM said, "I invite you to Visakhapatnam, which is going to be our capital in the days to come. I myself will also be shifting to Visakhapatnam in the months to come."

"We're organising a global summit... an investors summit on March 3-4 (in Visakhapatnam) (and I want) to take this opportunity to personally invite all of you to the summit... and request all of you to not only come but also put in a good word, a strong word, to colleagues abroad," he added while inviting the guests to the new capital to see the ease of doing business in his state.

This decision comes after years of political, legal and social hassles. While the previous government had announced Amaravati as the new capital and acquired over 33000 acres of land for developing the capital. This was followed by the announcement of three capitals of the state. While Amaravati will hold legislative power, Kurnool will have judicial and Vishakhapatnam will be home to executive power, which was cancelled by the High Court and thereafter the Supreme Court of India overturned the verdict of the High Court.
