Guwahati: The Income-Tax department is keeping a close watch on a Bangalore based auto-rickshaw driver Nalluralli Subramani as he is now living in a villa worth Rs. 1.6crore in an elite gated society in Whitefield.

According to an official of I-T department, Nalluralli Subramani has been under close watch from mid-April in the light of the parliamentary elections. The official further informed that they had shortlisted sources from where unaccounted money would come into play for the elections and as soon as the case reached the department they decided to go forward and search his property at Jatti Dwarakamai in Mahadevapura of Whitefield.

The official further informed that an investigation is underway and a notice has been served under Prohibition of Benami Property Transactions Act, 1988. He further informed that although the documents of the property indicate that this is not a benami case as the auto-rickshaw driver furnished an appropriate proof, the confirmation will have to wait till the completion of the investigation.

Meanwhile, Subramani’s neighbor also said that he leads a posh life and has stopped taking his auto-rickshaw out for work adding that he often spends time at home doing recreational activities and ends up partying with friends almost every evening like every elite person does. Some even claim that he is well connected with top political leaders.

Mahadevapura MLA and General Secretary of Karnataka BJP Arvind Limbavali sought to clarify that he had no personal contact with Subramani who is said to be linked with him saying that he was not a party member either. In a Facebook Live video, the former minister said, “Please spare me from such embarrassment.”

Limbavali further said that the accused had participated with him in a public function long back and allegations should not be made based on that. He also urged the I-T department to take stringent action if the accused is found guilty.

However, Subramani attributed his income to a foreigner who used to avail his auto-rickshaw service and claims that the woman offered to help him improve his lifestyle after she felt sympathetic on learning about his financial constraints. He further said that the lady lends him money so that he could provide good education to his children.
