India has varied landscapes and locations with minimal light pollution, giving ample opportunity for stargazing and astrophotographers. From astrophotography in Ladakh to the deep valleys of the Western Ghats, it is an ideal country overall for photographing the Milky Way, various constellations, meteor showers, and celestial phenomena.

1. Ladakh – The Cold Desert of Stars

Ladakh is basically referred to as the "Land of High Passes" and is considered one of the best places in India for astrophotography. At high altitudes, little light pollution, and clearer skies make this an ideal spot to observe and capture the celestial events, making astrophotography in Ladakh popular.

It houses the Indian Astronomical Observatory. This is a place that offers the darkest skies in India, and at an altitude of 4,500 meters above sea level, it presents a view of the Milky Way, which is not possible anywhere else.

2. Spiti Valley, Himachal Pradesh

3. Rann of Kutch, Gujarat

The broad, saline marsh of the Rann of Kutch is a flat, open ground which is totally ideal for taking pictures of the night sky without any interference. The White Rann reflects back the starlight and creates some surreal photographs.

Dhordo: It is the heart of the White Rann and it is famous for the huge salt flats.

Kala Dungar (Black Hill): The highest point in Kutch, with wonderful vistas of the night sky.

Best Time to Visit: November to February (during the Rann Utsav)

 Visit during the new moon for the darkest skies. Capture the interplay of moonlight with the white salt desert.

4. Jaisalmer, Rajasthan

This dry climate of the Thar Desert, along with low atmospheric disturbance, makes Jaisalmer one of the world's best locations for astrophotography. Dunes golden, forts old, and bright clear sky.

Best Places

Sam Sand Dunes: It is at some distance from the city lights so it can be a perfect spot for photography of meteors falling during meteor showers.

Kuldhara Village: A deserted village with strange ruins that gives a mystery look to your astrophotography.

Best Time to Visit: October to March.

Use the dunes as leading lines in your compositions. Try light painting techniques with the ruins.

5. Coorg, Karnataka

Situated in the Western Ghats, Coorg's dense foliage and almost negligible light pollution make it a very peaceful place for astrophotography. The rolling hills and coffee plantations add an immense contrast to the night sky making Coorg Milky Way photography stand out.

6. Matheran, Maharashtra

Matheran, a small hill station near Mumbai, offers clear skies with minimal light pollution. Matheran stargazing spots are a great getaway. Here are the key locations:

Panorama Point: This is one of the best places for sunrise and night sky photography.

Best Time to Visit: September to February.

Do not visit during weekends to avoid the crowd. Shoot at the early hours of night for the best results at Matheran stargazing spots.

7. Andaman and Nicobar Islands

The distant Andaman and Nicobar Islands offer pristine, pollution-free skies perfect for astrophotography. The reflection of stars on the still sea creates mesmerizing images.

Radhanagar Beach (Havelock Island): White sand and clear skies make Radhanagar Beach stargazing very popular for astrophotography.

Neil Island: The quietest of islands with little artificial light interference.

8. Araku Valley, Andhra Pradesh
