NEW DELHI: The Centre has issued a Z-category armed cover for the protection of Tibetan spiritual head Dalai Lama, taking into account possible threats to his safety.

Official sources confirmed the development on Thursday, highlighting the necessity of intensified security arrangements for the 89-year-old spiritual leader.

The Union Home Ministry has ordered the Central Reserve Police Force's (CRPF) VIP security wing to oversee his protection. The Dalai Lama will be now protected by a team of CRPF commandos under the Z-category cover of protection everywhere in the country.

Earlier, the Dalai Lama was also under the cover of the Himachal Pradesh Police, who gave him limited security cover. Also, local police officials would provide security to him when he visited Delhi or other places. But post a recent security assessment by central intelligence agencies, the government resolved to give him a uniform and improved security deal.

As part of this security enhancement, a group of around 30 CRPF commandos will take turns to give round-the-clock protection to the Dalai Lama. This is a demonstration of the government's efforts to guarantee the safety of the venerated Tibetan leader against possible threats.
