TAWANG: The picturesque town of Tawang has been receiving heavy snowfall since the evening of February 11, 2025, heavily impacting daily life and normal services.
Even though snowfall is not uncommon in the region, the intensity and duration of this spell have proved to be a serious concern for residents and the authorities, in general.
Among the major effects of the snowfall has been the overall disruption of electricity, water, and communication services. Snow accumulation and trees falling have impacted major infrastructure, and it is difficult for authorities to maintain normal functioning.
The majority of shops are open, but patronage is down as residents opt to remain indoors, venturing out only to acquire essential commodities.
Schools and other establishments have also taken a hard hit, as people have stopped attending classes due to freezing roads and cars being non-functional, making transport unsafe, especially for children. In line with the circumstances, numerous departments, including the Electrical Department, Public Health Engineering, Border Roads Organisation (BRO), Public Works Department (PWD), and Rural Works Department (RWD), have initiated work in the restoration of services.
Their personnel are working round the clock to clear roads, repair power lines, and restore water supplies. Police and military personnel are also actively assisting stranded tourists and commuters, particularly in the high-altitude areas of Sela and Jaswantgarh, where snowfall has been heaviest.
The administration of the district is on its toes, monitoring the situation closely and in touch with the army and other organizations to ensure that the emergency response is handled effectively. Weather forecasts indicate that the snowfall and harsh conditions can persist for the next two days and bring more inconvenience. Still, even in the challenging conditions, no serious damage or accidents have been witnessed so far.
