Guwahati: Cyclone Fani is said to be the strongest cyclone to be formed in the month of April in India in 43 years which will make a landfall in Odisha on Friday evening according to Meteorological department.

Odisha is likely to bear the maximum impact of Cyclone Fani and the states of West Bengal and Andhra Pradesh will also be affected.

The Eastern Naval Command is all set to render necessary humanitarian assistance if the need arises during the Cyclone Fani which is intensifying into a severe cyclonic storm on the southern and south-eastern coast of India.

The Model Code of Conduct has already been lifted in several districts of Odisha to facilitate the rescue and relief activities. Rescue and relief activities have been lifted in Puri, Jagatsinghpur, Kendrapara, Bhadrak, Balasore, Mayurbhanj, Gajapati, Ganjam, Khordha, Cuttack and Jaipur.

However, it will not be the worst storm in recent years. The wind speed of a cyclonic storm is 80-90 kmph with winds gusting up to 100 kmph. In case of an "extremely severe cyclonic storm", the wind speed goes up to 170-180 kmph and could reach up to 195-200 kmph.

The center on Tuesday ordered the release of Rs. 1,086 crore to four states as advance financial assistance for undertaking preventive and relief measures.

The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and the Indian Coast Guard have also been put on high alert and the state governments of Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh and Kerala.

The State Disaster Management Authority of Odisha has also been directed by the Odisha government to keep a close watch over the situation and has asked concerned departments to stay prepared to stay prepared to deal with any challenge.

It has also been directed to the authorities to keep ready cyclone and food shelters in coastal areas with all necessary emergency materials. The Department of Health and Family Welfare, Food Supplies and Consumer Welfare have also asked to keep stock of essential medicines and food items in all the district headquarters.
