
SRINAGAR: Tourists visiting Srinagar’s iconic Dal Lake will now have a more convenient way to experience its serene beauty with the introduction of "Uber Shikara," Asia's first water transport service. This initiative integrates modern technology with the region’s rich traditions, allowing visitors to pre-book shikara rides using the Uber app.
The service was inaugurated by Prabhjeet Singh, President of Uber India and South Asia, at Nehru Park, a popular destination on Dal Lake. Initially starting with seven locally owned shikaras, the service plans to expand based on demand, making these traditional rides more accessible and affordable for tourists, initially starting with seven locally owned shikaras.
"Uber Shikara is our humble attempt to blend technology and tradition, enhancing accessibility and uplifting tourism in the breathtaking landscape of Kashmir," Prabhjeet Singh stated.
This launch marks a significant milestone for Uber, being the first company in Asia to provide water transport service. Each shikara can accommodate up to four passengers and is available for one-hour bookings daily from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. with scheduling options ranging from 12 hours to 15 days in advance.
“Anyone who comes to Srinagar must experience a shikara ride, which is a timeless activity on every traveller’s bucket list. Our service brings together the magic of technology and Kashmir’s traditional charm, providing a seamless experience for travellers, said Ruchika Tomar, Uber’s Director of Communications.
“This service standardized pricing provides a reliable booking platform, benefiting both tourists and shikara riders,” he said. Local operators see the potential for increased business as more visitors embrace the convenience of online reservations,” Wali Mohammed Bhat, President of the Shikara Wala Association, told a news agency.
