NEW DELHI: Opposed members of the INDIA bloc have formally presented a no-confidence motion against Rajya Sabha chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar, with accusations of favoritism in parliamentary business. Congressman Jairam Ramesh confirmed that the INDIA coalition parties had not had any choice but to lodge the no-confidence motion "given the extremely partisan conduct by the chairman in the House".
According to Ramesh, the motion was not against Dhankhar as a person but was necessary for protecting the institution of the Rajya Sabha and its integrity. An opposition leader, speaking outside Parliament, echoed these sentiments by emphasizing that the goal was not to target a person but to defend the parliamentary institution and ensure fair representation.
This has been one of the strong points of criticism of the opposition in light of Dhankhar's decision to not let them raise such important issues.Sanjay Singh of the Aam Aadmi Party, Priyanka Chaturvedi of the Shiv Sena, and Nadimul Haque and Sagarika Ghosh of the Trinamool Congress are among the prominent opposition leaders who have supported the move.
However, the Biju Janata Dal (BJD), an important member in the Rajya Sabha, remains unresponsive to the appeal. The Chief of BJD Naveen Patnaik said that "The party is still examining the petition and will take appropriate actions after proper deliberation considering it supported Dhankhar's Vice-Presidential candidacy in 2022.
