New Delhi: Good news for the travelers and the ones who are thinking of applying for a passport and the government on Wednesday have announced that from now onwards, applicants will be able to avail passports within 11 days.

The government, announcing it in Lok Sabha on Wednesday has termed the passport as a tool of empowerment, has added that the process of applying for a passport and then finally availing it in hands will not be a lengthy process anymore. The entire process will lead one to avail the document within 11 days. This has also been added that under normal circumstances the process will take the aforementioned time.

The abovementioned announcement has been made by Minister of State for External Affairs V Muraleedharan during the Question Hour in Lok Sabha.

What is more, for availing a passport under the 'tatkal' category, one will have to wait only for a day's time. Muraleedharan further added that an application has been launched in 731 police districts for quick police verification of applicants.

With this announcement, the minister further hopes that with the quick procedures of the passport approval, the delays and corruptions long tied with the passport application process are expected to come to an end. The process of passport application in India had long been connected with bribery and corruption. For common people, applying for passport was a long hectic process which would need to them to wait longer than the usual or pay a certain amount as a bribe either for police verification or for quickening the approval procedure.

The question on passports was raised by Manish Tewari (Congress) asking the government why people find it difficult to get passports. The minister also added that despite having 36 passport offices in the country, 93 passport seva kendras and 412 post office passport seva kendras are also there and yet, the passport issuing process takes so long.
