RAIPUR: In a significant operation along the Chhattisgarh-Odisha border, 14 Maoists were killed in a fierce encounter with the Chhattisgarh police on Monday. The encounter, which is still ongoing, has raised concern about the rising tensions in the region, as more details are expected to emerge.
The police reported that among the casualties, one of the Maoists had a bounty of 1 crore rupees on his head, highlighting the gravity of the encounter. The deadly clash follows a series of violent incidents in the region involving Maoists groups.
Two Border Security Force (BSF) jawans were injured when Maoists detonated an improvised explosive device (IED) in Chhattisgarh’s Narayanpur district on January 17.
The IED blast occurred as a BSF road-opening party was on duty between Camp Garpa and Garpa village. Local authorities, including Narayanpur Superintendent of Police (SP) Prabhat Kumar, confirmed the attack, and further information is expected to be released soon.
The violence continued in mid-January when two CRPF jawans were injured in a pressure IED blast near Putkel village, under the Basaguda police station in Bijapur district. This attack, which took place on January 16, was yet another example of the ongoing conflict between security forces and Maoists insurgents in the region.
Earlier, on January 12, a major encounter between security forces and Maoists resulted in the deaths of five Naxalites, including two women, in Bijapur district.
