NEW DELHI: In a significant effort to enhance road safety, the Indian Government has imposed harsh penalties for traffic offenses, with effect from March 1, 2025. The increased fines, specified in a recent notification, aim to discourage reckless behavior and bring about obedience to traffic rules.
According to the new regulations, those found driving under the influence of alcohol will be fined Rs. 10,000 or imprisoned for six months. Repeat offenders will be fined Rs. 15,000 and sentenced up to two years in prison. Riding without a helmet will incur a fine of Rs. 1,000, as well as suspension of the rider's license for three months. Not wearing a seatbelt will also incur a fine of Rs. 1,000.
The use of mobile phones on the road has witnessed a significant hike in fines, which is now Rs. 5,000 from the earlier Rs. 500. Not driving with a valid license or insurance will result in fines of Rs. 5,000 and Rs. 2,000 respectively, with repeat offenders being charged even higher fines or even jail time.
Other offenses, including reckless driving and not giving way to emergency vehicles, will attract a fine of Rs. 5,000 and Rs, 10,000 respectively. Fines for overloading and jumping signals have also been doubled, and they now cost Rs. 20,000 and Rs. 5,000.
For young offenders, the penalties are stringent, such as a Rs. 25,000 fine, suspension of vehicle registration for one year, and ban on obtaining a driving license for 25 years. These actions demonstrate the government's resolve to curb road accidents and impose traffic discipline throughout the country.
